Why less than Rudy? With th knife and the bra clasp, what did the judges think Amanda and Raffaele were doing while Rudy was killing her?
Or did they just add on for the sexual assault?

I am saddened by the devastation these three young people have created in ruiing their own lives, their families, and taking Meredith's future from her and her family.
It is all over but the shouting, of which the FOA will doubtless provide plenty.
I have been impressed throughout by what I have seen of Italian justice and the people of Perugia.
I'm sure the reason for the exact sentencing will be made clear when the court documents its ruling, but for now it is enough to know that justice will be served.
That will never correct this great wrong, but it is the correct thing to happen.

Probably because the emotional pleas by the 2 defense teams this week and the focus on character (Amélie, Bambi....) had an impact on some level. The pleas were for leniency, I think.

And when they get out there will still be no Meredith, and her family will all go to their graves knowing that their loss could never be repaired.

What a huge fucking waste.

Italian Jury Convicts U.S. Student of Murder

After one of the most closely-watched trials in Italy, Amanda
Knox, an American college student, and her sometime Italian
boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were convicted of murdering
her housemate in the picturesque university town of Perugia,
The Associated Press reports. The case gripped Italy and drew
intense international media attention at a pair of young
people who seemed unlikely killers with no clear motive or
violent pasts.

good news for the Kerchers; I hope they can now move forward with their lives and enjoy their memories of their very talented daughter. I also hope that the Knox/Mellas clan can find it within themselves to dredge up a bit of dignity and offer their condolences for what their evil daughter has done.

So King 5's Italian "expert" Dr. Canali says that the reason that Amanda got only 26 years shows that the jury was not convinced that she was guilty--the final decision will be on appeal, the defense will get to ask for new evidence which this court denied them, as bad decision will be overturned. Yada, yada, yada.

Maybe, even though how did Rudy assaulted Meredith if the other two didn't threatened / restrained her? We will have to wait for the report I guess.

Quick question:
I haven't keep all the charges separate.
Does this sentence also include the defamation charge concerning Lumumba?
Or will that come separately?

Wow. I'm not so surprised they got less time than Guede though. After all, there was more hard evidence against him found at the crime scene, he fled the country, and all things considered his guilt seems to have been clearer than Knox's and Sollecito's. Maybe the court took that into account regarding the sentencing.

I hope no-one else is watching this on sky.... Rossi is almost choking. Don't think he can cope with the verdict.

So the verdict shows that Knox was more "culpable" than Sollecito. Only one year difference in the sentencing, but highly significant.

Such a sad case for everyone. Knox was apparently wailing when being led away. No more time in the spotlight for her. Until the appeal....

I always saw AK and RS as the masterminds of this crime (because of the clean up and leaving incriminating evidence of Rudy behind), for that reason I expected a higher sentence for them. Above all for Amanda Knox as she faced the additional slander charge (and was found guilty).

Am I the only one who is a bit disappointed that the scapegoat got more years in a fast track trial than the string pullers?

As far as I understand that means that they can get parole after half of the time? Well, at least they got convicted.

I also wonder whether the sentence somehow reflects the fact that AK and RS actually had a relationship with Meredith.
So there might be some twisted thread of a motive, a reason for them to do what they did.
But RG had absolutely no cause to be involved.

But I'm just clutching at straws with this one, because I'd have expected them to all get about the same.

Here's the deal: The talking heads had all prepared two sets of sound bites, depending on the verdict. This was the easy one, since it required no adjustment with regard to other sound bites. Had it gone the other way, in the place of "shame on Italy" we would have heard "praise" for Italy. Personally, I don't think all of Italy needs to feel shame or pride. The judges and jurors looked at the body of evidence and reached a verdict, independently, without thinking about larger issues, such as whether media talking heads in America would be ashamed of them. I think it is to the credit of the judges and jury that they were able to tune out all the noise and deliberate calmly.
